Role Summary

Providing critical challenge and detailed review on credit applications submitted by Front Office and providing recommendations to Approvers within CD, EMEA or Tokyo HQ. A second line of defence role providing credit risk management / oversight of new credit transactions, in designated sectors within the Financial Institutions (FI) and sovereign credit portfolio across EMEA including both Developed and Emerging Markets (CIS, Middle East and Africa). Provide the effective credit management of client relationship and exposures within designated sectors within the FI credit portfolio across EMEA.

  • Report to SCO or JGM/MD for SMBC BI and SMBC booked Financial Institution (FI) transactions, within a team of 7 specialist Credit professionals. The team’s coverage includes, Banks, Sovereigns, Non-Bank FIs (e.g. Insurance, Investment Trust / Asset Manager, PE Fund / Sponsor, etc.).
  • Act as primary analyst on specified portfolio of Banks, determined by regions and types of business and new transactions. Secondary coverage includes Sovereign and Non-Bank FI portfolio.
  • Manage credit portfolio including applications and approval process, and emerging credit developments in conjunction with Front Office (first line of defence).
  • Engage with Front Office professionals and provide appropriate challenge on risk issues / develop workable solutions to mitigate risk issues.

Skills/Experience

  • Degree level education and / or relevant professional qualifications (eg: ACA, ACCA, ACT, CFA), and a track record of continued learning and development. 
  • Experience in a credit management role within a major international bank.
  • Preference for candidates with strong exposure to emerging markets, including Middle East and Africa.

Position Description

Assist in management of FI credit portfolio with primary responsibility for management of credit applications and monitorings. Assessment of new transactions - c.1,000 deals pa, and related credit monitorings. Management of under-performing / deteriorating credit situations through continuous monitoring and through of credit and market experience.

Exercise strong risk assessment methodology toward new transactions and management of a portfolio of FI clients (including Problem Assets), across a broad variety of sectors, geographies, and asset / product types, seeking guidance from more senior staff / management as appropriate.

Experience and capability to take a standard FI transaction from inception to approval, with some guidance and supervision where appropriate. 

Develop relationships within the team: seek guidance and advice from colleagues; express well-reasoned arguments and influence senior management; and assist in recruitment and training of more junior staff.

Willingness / flexibility to be involved in ad hoc projects supporting the strategy of FI credit team and the wider department / institution.

Draw on own expertise and professional knowledge and that of colleagues to assist in developing innovative solutions / improvements to status quo.

Exemplify strong credit management and analytical skills, sharing experience to assist in the professional development of colleagues, and build expertise within the team.
