We're looking for an Associate / AVP, GFIG Coverage – Relationship Management for our Global Financial Institutions Group to join our team in Paris.
This role offers the opportunity to develop your Financial Institutions coverage expertise within a global, multi-product banking platform. Working alongside senior GFIG bankers in Paris, London, and Frankfurt, you will support client coverage and business origination across Southern and Eastern Europe, with a particular focus on Spain and Italy, while coordinating solutions across SMBC’s international network.
About this role
The Global Financial Institutions Group provides relationship coverage and tailored financial solutions to banks, broker-dealers, insurers, funds, and other financial institutions through a global, multi-product approach. This role supports the development of selected client relationships across Southern and Eastern Europe, contributing to origination, transaction execution, and the continued expansion of SMBC’s Financial Institutions business in the EU. As such, it is anticipated that there will be travels across the EU countries.
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Acting as a key EU-based contact for an assigned portfolio of banks, broker-dealers, and non-bank financial institutions across Southern and Eastern Europe
- Supporting senior GFIG bankers in implementing client strategies, developing relationships, and originating new business opportunities
- Contributing to the origination, structuring, and execution of lending and broader banking transactions, with appropriate credit and risk oversight
- Coordinating with Capital Markets, Treasury, Lending, Trade Finance, Structured Finance, Credit, Legal, Compliance, and Operations teams to deliver relevant client solutions
- Managing KYC, credit, pipeline reporting, transaction monitoring, and other execution requirements for the assigned portfolio
- Preparing briefing materials and supporting senior management meetings, client visits, and industry events such as IMF and SIBOS
- Supporting and, where applicable, developing interns or junior colleagues in line with SMBC’s values
The anticipated salary range for this role is €80,000 - €105,000 with the final offer determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, role scope, location, and relevant market factors. In addition to base salary, the role may be eligible for a discretionary incentive award and a competitive benefits package, including core benefits such as pension provision.
Profile Description
For you to succeed in this role
- Relevantminimum 3 years of experience in Financial Institutions coverage, relationship management, corporate and investment banking, or a comparable client-facing financial services role
- Good understanding of banks, broker-dealers, and non-bank financial institutions, including their business models and financing requirements
- Strong knowledge of credit and financial analysis, with experience supporting the structuring and execution of lending or other banking transactions
- Degree-level education in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related discipline
- Fluency in English; French, Spanish, or Italian language skills would be advantageous

Desirable
- Experience covering Financial Institutions clients in Spain, Italy, France, or other Southern and Eastern European markets
- Knowledge of Capital Markets, Securitisation, Treasury, Trade Finance, Structured Finance, or related Financial Institutions products
- Experience supporting cross-border transactions and coordinating multi-product banking relationships
- Previous exposure to KYC, credit approval, pipeline reporting, and ongoing portfolio monitoring activities
