Role Summary

 

Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for an Assistant Vice President to join our Sustainability Strategy team as an ESG Performance and Data Manager

 

  • The primary purpose of this role is to consider the ESG data and reporting needs related to the EBA’s climate and environmental risk-related expectations for SMBC Bank EU AG ('SMBC EU'). The focus will be on new sustainability metrics required for inclusion in SMBC EU’s Prudential Transition Plan or other Management Information (MI.) 
  • Once in post, the role will support ESG performance management and data capabilities within SMBC EU’s Sustainability Strategy function, enabling the effective tracking, analysis and communication of sustainability performance across the region, in line with the strategy, and enhanced reporting needs related to the EBA’s expectations.
  • The role is central to embedding a data-driven approach to sustainability strategy execution, helping to steer business decisions, monitor progress against strategic objectives, and support external disclosures and regulatory initiatives. It also contributes to effective cross-regional collaboration, operational efficiency, and strong governance frameworks, ensuring that sustainability performance management within EMEA is consistent, accurate, and aligned with SMBC Group’s priorities.

 

The anticipated salary range for this role is €48,000.00 - €84,000.00, with the final offer determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, role scope, location, and relevant market factors. In addition to base salary, the role may be eligible for a discretionary incentive award and a competitive benefits package, including core benefits such as pension provision.

Position Description

 

Supporting Regulatory Alignment with ECB Expectations

  • Support the wider Sustainability Strategy team on ECB regulatory expectations. The focus will be on the development and definition of new sustainability metrics required by ECB for inclusion in SMBC Bank EU AG’s Prudential Transition Plan.
  • Participate in and actively contribute to project meetings and governance forums related to the relevant Sustainability Project. 

Internal Sustainability Performance Reporting

  • Develop and enhance Sustainability KPI and KRI dashboards to include metrics as described above, and aligned to strategy.
  • Run and report EU and, as needed, EMEA monthly Sustainability dashboards.
  • Ensure timely preparation of management reports and meeting materials required for EU governance forums in which sustainability performance reporting is presented.
  • Extract and effectively communicate business-relevant insights from sustainability performance reporting.

Effective Governance

  • Ensure proper documentation for sustainability metrics monitored in EU and EMEA is available and kept up to date, particularly creating new documentation for new metrics as described above.
  • Act as the local owner in EU for models and EUCs used by sustainability teams in ESG performance reporting processes.
  • Champion good data governance within EU, and act as the local Data Steward in EU for datapoints used by sustainability teams in ESG performance reporting processes.

Shaping and Driving Strategy

  • Support in steering the SMBC Group EMEA Sustainability Strategy, especially where SMBC should adjust strategy or course-correct in response to insights from sustainability performance reporting and ESG data.
  • Provide support to the Head of Sustainability Strategy, EU in the development of strategic goals, and, where relevant, the wider Sustainability Strategy team in any related preparatory work (e.g. double materiality assessment)
  • Assist the Head Sustainability Strategy, EU in defining, communicating, executing and monitoring the strategic goals of the team in the EU and EMEA region.

External Sustainability Disclosures

  • Contribute, where relevant, to quantitative external disclosures related to sustainability .

Cross-regional Collaboration

  • Contribute to EMEA sustainability performance reporting, acting as cover for London-based colleagues in SMBC BI.
  • Assist the Sustainability Performance and Data team in performing business-as-usual controls such as four-eyes checks as part of the monthly ESG Performance Dashboard process.
  • Partner with colleagues in STPD and other departments to achieve efficiencies in use of resources.

Administration

  • On an ad hoc basis as required, draft and prepare key presentations and reports for senior team members.
  • On an ad hoc basis as required, document meeting minutes, capture and proactively follow up on actions.
  • Ensure appropriate administration and record keeping in all activities performed.

Key working relationships will be with:

  • Head of Sustainability Strategy, EU; Head of Sustainability Strategy, EMEA; Director, Sustainability Performance & Data; and other members of the Sustainability Strategy Team.
  • Sustainability Risk teams, in EU and EMEA.
  • Sustainability teams in Finance & Control, in EU and EMEA.
