Section 2 – Purpose of Job

Position is to work as deal executive reporting into exec. director

  • Day to day responsibility of working on deals
  • To help lead marketing efforts for pitching for new business typically working alongside a Director
  • A to Z work on new transactions: to help in negotiations of terms. due diligence, writing and  presentation of credit paper to credit committee, and to execute new transactions
  • To link and work closely with all functions within the Leasing & Finance team
  • To lead and provide support deal related and collaboration activities with other LF and SMBC BI departments including with relationship managers, syndication and other product groups,
  • Deal focus will be on junior and mezz debt transactions, typically into project finance deals but may also be into corporate deals
  • Will be expected to be able to act as key team member when team is originating and executing structured asset finance transactions of a complex nature, dealing with preparation and checking of financial models, risk analysis, writing credit memos and transaction summaries, reviewing legal and technical DD reports and supporting approval process working in deal teams. Therefore, the role requires strong analytical and numerical skills.

Section 3 – Background

  • LF is a product group of the bank. The nature of the business is to own assets hence the group operates through wholly owned subsidiaries of SMBC rather than have the bank own assets directly. Consequently, SMBC requires LF to be able to run as an autonomous entity within the group although sharing a range of resources via SLAs. Team provide asset finance solutions to clients of the bank and front desk staff work both with various departments in the EMEA region as well as source deals directly themselves.
  • More recently SMBCLF has developed a new business sector providing junior/mezz debt products to bank clients in agreed target sectors
  • LF breaks its front desk down into sector/asset specialists and different staff are also closely linked to other departments for joint working opportunities. This position is to lead transactions under the guidance of transaction directors, working on all aspects of the deals from helping marketing to closing deals

Section 4 – Facts / Scale

  • LF is a core part of the SMBC EMEA Division with a portfolio of c.USD2bn and a further portfolio under management of an additional USD2bn
  • Member of the Structured Solutions group of LF which is one of four product/sector groups within LF. This is a team of five people within the LF group which is itself a team of thirty five people

 

Section 5 – Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Budget responsibility for a section of target as directed
  • Runs deal closing processes largely independent of director team head involvement but whilst working within normal team governance setup.
  • Range of deals worked on is across all LF product range with a strong focus on junior investment opportunities.
  • To act as a point of contact for internal and external transaction stakeholders. Is required to build and develop external client relationships
  • To work on the marketing and origination process including client pitching, pricing, analysis of financial models, credit, documentation development, and on-going documentation drawdown process
  • Involvement in cross departmental collaboration programmes under guidance of reporting director to source lending opportunities across other product lines
  • To utilise experience gained of different financing structures to build inventory
  • To attend client meetings to ensure an understanding of on-going client relationship issues. Depending on the meeting may be the sole LF representative or part of a team
  • To continue working with bank syndication teams to release value from portfolio of closed deals
  • To prepare various information documents such as Team Sheets, Cash flows, Credit papers to insure internal progression of transactions
  • To review legal documentation review effective protection offered by covenants and to ensure smooth execution of transaction
  • Aid training junior team members 

Section 6 – Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Good negotiation skills
  • Existing experience of working in the origination environment of a junior debt investor, UK leasing or a project finance business
  • Understanding of junior debt products or project finance required, leasing products useful
  • Strong analytical, numerical and financial skills, in particular the ability to use Excel to advanced level
  • Financial modelling is key and together with credit and investment thesis preparation are all required
  • Strong relationship and inter-personal skills
  • Qualifications: Degree level as a minimum
  • Continental language would be a very strong plus: French, German, Italian, Spanish

  • The role is expected to work on complex transactions with multiple stakeholders where completion is invariably required within pressurised timelines.
  • The role requires attention to detail to ensure that the transaction from the clients expectation meets the details that are submitted and approved internally
  • Given the requirement to achieve LF targets and the competitive nature of our market place the role requires innovation, collaboration and a relationship orientated approach
