Role Summary

VP role in the New Energies & Natural Resources team, part of EMEA Structured Finance Department 

The position entails providing support and taking some lead roles in the execution of transactions, as well as marketing activities and origination of new business.

The role requires strong analytical skills and will involve the review and analysis of information including customer financial statements, project finance financial models, due diligence and legal documentation.

Strong communication skills required as there will be various interfaces both within the organisation (Credit, Syndications, Operations etc) as well as externally including client-facing dealing including marketing, deal execution and DD/KYC.

Business Area

The New Energies & Natural Resources team is part of SMBC's EMEA Structured Finance Department, Its scope is to originate and execute transactions in the energy sector, comprising the conventional oil & gas value chain and low-carbon energies and related infrastructures. The geographical scope covers Europe, Middle-East and Africa. 

Position Description

  • The role reports into the head of the New Energies & Natural Resources team, and generally would be providing support to Director level colleagues running transactions as well as leading on some transactions.
  • There is a customer facing element to the role, including gathering information (KYC, DD etc) and attending customer meetings with more senior colleagues, marketing and transaction execution. Internally, it involves some administration tasks and would interface with various other departments including portfolio management and Credit and to colleagues in Nikko and with other regions.
  • The role requires significant knowledge of Project Finance theory, practice, documentation and execution. Knowledge and experience of acquisition finance is also highly desirable.
  • The role has no direct reports but may be responsible for helping to train and support colleagues with internal processes and as part of project teams – both within New Energies & Natural Resources, across the departments and externally.
  • Although there is not a budget specific to the role, the role is supporting the achievement of the team budget.
  • It would be expected that the role would work on 6-12 transactions each year.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

  • Support senior staff as part of deal teams in the marketing, origination and execution of transactions, and take the lead on some transactions or parts thereof.
  • Prepare credit applications and managing data input for GBR, EIC, Grading and other systems, and help to train and supervise more junior staff in that role.
  • Liaise with all relevant departments within EMEA required for marketing and execution including CD, OAD, CPD, legal, coverage departments, Nikko CM (DCM and swaps), LCM, TD, Other branches.
  • As appropriate, financial modelling and analysis for projects in support of transaction lead and as part of an advisory team.
  • Understanding the Bank’s internal procedures and processes and applying them correctly and in compliance with all rules and regulations.
  • Working on asset management & distribution activities, and other areas of SFD wider business as requested.
  • To carry out marketing activities for the team.
    • Dealing with customers for origination of regulated products.
    • Preparing externally facing marketing materials in line with the guidelines and seeking compliance approval.
    • Taking responsibility for a specific customer group (market, product, region).
  • Start to take on some team management responsibilities for more junior staff or by contributing to senior management initiatives.
