Role Summary

  • To provide support and work on the origination, structuring and execution of NAV Facilities to Private Markets Funds across EMEA.  The role will focus on execution and management of NAV facilities on the internal systems and will also give exposure to product knowledge on legal documentation, underlying asset risk, selected client coverage and complexity of private funds structures.  
  • To participate in risk assessment and coordination across key risk stakeholders such as Credit.
  • Executing NAV facilities require to work in conjunction with SMBC Group to execute the transaction, extensions or waivers in partnership with credit, operations, LCMX, legal.
  • The role will include the work towards product approval within other jurisdictions, including SMBC EU Frankfurt, Brussels, Paris and Dusseldorf with extensive interaction with control functions across EMEA.

Business Area

  • Based in London, this role is part of the NAV Financing team of Specialised Products Department comprising NAV Financing, Leverage Finance, Subscription Finance and Real Estate Financing.  NAV Facilities on different strategies (Secondaries, Buyouts, Infrastructure or Real Estate) will have typically been originated in the first instance by asset teams within SPD or ISD, including the Sponsor Coverage Group.
  • The primary objective is to focus on the execution of such facilities while being exposed to the proposals, structuring and negotiation of NAV Facilities. The role will have to integrate within the structuring the economic assessment of the facilities and risk appetite framework.
  • The candidate will work towards acquiring in depth credit/financial/legal/risk analysis to be undertaken and presented both within SPD and to Credit Department. The legal side of the facility will be supported by LCMX and the legal team to ensure facilities are following internal policies and key decisions to be highlighted to front office.
  • The role also involves the proactive development of client / borrower relationships to identify and execute new business opportunities for other teams such as derivatives, FX or other lending offices.
  • The target client list will operate and be based throughout EMEA and will typically be global clients. This will require interaction with SMBC personnel and offices around the world

Position Description

  • In charge of entering all the required steps within the systems in order to execute a new facility or amend an existing facility including monitoring the required approvals and work flow from the different teams within and outside SPD: grading facilities, KYC of the borrowers and guarantors, Credit approvals and Operations. The candidate will be required to have a good comprehension of internal processes.
  • To get familiar with the structure of funds and evaluate the most appropriate security structure (pledge over bank accounts and borrower equity, and/or underlying asset equity, security coverage, partial or total guarantee, ECL, etc).
  • Understand the key risks in the underlying assets or portfolio with a close cooperation with the assets specialists (Leverage Finance, Infrastructure, Real Estate) and understand why the covenants and repayment scheme are appropriate.
  • Communicate clearly well in advance with Credit officer and legal specialists in LCMX or legal team on the structure and underlying risks to achieve the best possible outcome in the negotiation with the borrowers. In parallel to ensure the transaction is well received by the deciders towards a smooth execution.
  • To work closely with members of the team to focus on execution and coordination between the different teams, ensuring all internal processes are run efficiently.
  • To participate in the execution of waivers and restructuring of existing deals and make sure all data are up to date for reporting and portfolio management.
  • Acquisition and understanding of internal processes for execution and maintenance of facilities.
  • High ethical/professional standards in delivering a high quality of output.
  • Rigorous understanding of credit, investment and financial analysis and their application in investment decisions and transaction structuring.
  • Solution focused with proven business judgement and high ethical and professional standards.
  • Proven track record on conflict resolution and ability to participate in teams.
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in English to communicate complex proposals.
  • Networking skills, and ability and endurance to materially help manage transactions through to their conclusion.
