Purpose of Job

The OPPD Data Insights Analyst will support the Operational Planning Department (OPPD) to deliver on its vision and strategic objectives through the design, delivery and maintenance of timely Key Metrics, Management Information (MI) products and insightful analysis. This role will be an embedded role within the Data Analytics Team in the EMEA Data Office. 

A primary objective will be to turn their data into actionable insights for a broad range of stakeholders including EMEA Operations senior management. The role will be responsible for designing, developing and maintaining a suite of materials suitable for management committees including the Enterprise Operations Forum (EOF), Operational Risk and Resilience Committee (ORRC) and Executive Committee (ExCo). The role would also be expected to support adhoc analysis requests from OPPD Management and the Heads of EMEA Operations.

Background

The Operational Planning Department (OPPD) sits within EMEA Operations which provides a broad range of services supporting the SMBC EMEA division. The key objectives of EMEA Operations Function are driving transformation, enhancing governance & control and delivering sustainable & scalable operational and technology capabilities, EMEA Operations serve as the driving force behind the execution of transformation initiatives and innovation of business processes, all in support of the overall business strategy. This includes supporting the Chief Operations Function and the SMF24 to effectively discharge their duties.  

EMEA Data Office was established in October 2021 and sits within the Operations Planning Department (OPPD), covering all EMEA entities (including Securities and Banking subsidiaries) and all datasets. The Data Office is responsible for defining and implementing the EMEA Data Strategy, building out its data management capabilities, and ultimately focusing on how to exploit data more effectively and innovatively across SMBC.  The Data Office has been formed to really drive data-led transformation through the bank.

Facts/Scale

The EMEA Data Office has grown quickly to have over eighty members (a mixture of permanent employees, contractors, and consultants) in less than 3 years, and continues to expand to support our strategic priorities. 

The Data Analytics Team (within the EMEA Data Office) currently has over 35 team members. This role will not have any direct reports but is expected to matrix manage roles across the Data Tech community as well as provide training, coaching and support for Data roles in the wider Analytics Community in EMEA Operations. 

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Acting as key part of the Data Office interface with the OPPD Planning Management Team to manage and prioritise a backlog of MI and Analytics requirements. 
  • Preparing and transforming data for use in analytics products using appropriate tooling and techniques. 
  • Delivering new analytics products using best practice data analysis and data visualisation techniques to translate complex data into insightful reports and interactive dashboards. 
  • Running proofs of concept to evaluate feasibility and value, uncovering benefits for our stakeholders, customers, and businesses. 
  • Maintaining and supporting OPPD MI and Analytics products. 
  • Supporting the rollout and adoption of OPPD MI and Analytics products. This includes providing in-house coaching support and training for users and product owners. 
  • Working with other analysts in OPPD Planning to help them create MI and Analytics products. 
  • Identifying cross-functional use-cases where data analysis and data visualisation techniques can be applied to deliver business value. 
  • Analyse trends and identify interesting insights to present to senior management audiences. 
  • Ensuring that there is sufficient documentation for the products to assure both development and ongoing maintenance. 
  • Collaborating with the wider data family, including analysts, engineers, and product managers. 
  • Supporting delivery of the strategy for OPPD Planning and the Chief Operations Function 

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience with using Power BI and Tableau to develop data driven dashboards and experience of using advanced features and functionality to deliver powerful dashboards. 
  • Demonstrable experience of training, mentoring and coaching others in the use of Data Visualisation tools like Tableau and Power BI. 
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills to interpret large datasets, identify trends, and extract actionable insights for strategic decision making 
  • Experience working in a data team and collaborating with cross functional teams (both technical and non technical) to identify, scope and develop data analytics solutions. 
  • An outstanding problem solver who has an analytical mindset, is inquisitive and excellent with technology enabling a creative approach to solution scoping and delivery. 
  • Core competency in SQL, strong data manipulation and data preparation skills along with expertise in using tools like Alteryx or Power Query.  
  • Ability to manage Tableau or Power BI Dashboards using appropriate version control methodologies. 
  • Solid understanding of the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) Testing aligned to analytics 
  • Demonstrable experience of applying appropriate testing methodologies to quality assure development. 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and must be comfortable presenting to and facilitating group of business users at all levels. 
  • A good understanding of, and experience of applying, project management principles and approaches. 
  • Experience of working in the financial services industry and knowledge of data related regulatory requirements for financial service sector. The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of data analytics use cases in one or more of the following
  • Banking Operations, Operational Planning, Operational Resilience, Chief Operations Function (SMF24 responsibilities) 
  • Ability to plan and manage own work to meet challenging deadlines with minimal supervision. 

Desirable  

  • Tableau or Power BI certification 
  • Solid experience of statistical techniques and hands on statistical modelling experience 
  • Proficiency with at least one data science programming language e.g., R, Python 
  • Knowledge of emerging trends and issues within the Data Analytics and Data Science landscapes 
  • Experience working with cloud environments and components, specifically Azure, Data Bricks 

Challenges

  • This is a greenfield opportunity where capability often needs will be built from scratch. 
  • There is limited understanding of the opportunities from new data and analytics capabilities, and therefore good project and communication skills are required.
