Role Summary
Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for an AVP to join our Leveraged Finance Origination team in our London office!
An AVP in the Origination team will:
- Work as part of a deal team to analyse and execute new leveraged finance transaction opportunities, utilising SMBC’s broad suite of private credit and broadly syndicated loan & bond capabilities.
- Support the team’s origination activities through the preparation of marketing materials
- Support the development of SMBC’s sponsor backed activities in Europe, including the cross-sell and execution of derivatives and other banking products to leveraged loan relationships, and the development of SMBC’s growing managed fund platform
Key Candidate Requirements:
- Credit: (i) Good understanding of, and ability to perform, advanced financial analysis and modelling using excel; (ii) Good understanding of core financial statements and accounting principles; along with core corporate finance tools (e.g. valuation, DCF, scenario analysis) and company analysis tools (e.g. five forces, SWOT); (iii) Capable of presenting thoughts within a deal team, working to a high degree of accuracy; (iv) Capable of working under very tight time pressure, including remotely across the London/ Frankfurt/ Paris/ Dublin offices
- Structuring Knowledge: Basic knowledge of common term sheet components (e.g. leverage, ranking, margins, covenants)
- Execution: Capable of accurately managing sections of the closing process in line with agreed processes, liaising with internal stakeholders and flagging problems to line manager. Capable of quickly building peer network with internal departments (eg CD/LCM/OAD)
- Marketing: Ability to accurately prepare marketing materials, using Excel and PowerPoint
Business Area
SMBC’s Leveraged Finance Origination team provides lead arrange financing for mid and large cap clients under 3 core strategies: (i) Private Credit, (ii) Broadly Syndicated and (iii) Leveraged Corporate. Key products include Senior and Unitranche debt, with SMBC deploying capital from our balance sheet and on behalf of our managed funds, as well as providing Underwritten Senior and Junior debt. In 2024, SMBC was ranked as a top 10 lender for the bookrunning and direct lending league tables, with 90 deals and $7.2bn committed new volume.
Position Description
SMBC’s European Leverage Finance Origination Team sits within the Specialised Products Department in SMBC and comprises c.60 staff across the London, Frankfurt, Paris and Dublin offices. The team works closely with the Leveraged Finance Portfolio Management, Business Operations, Loan Capital Markets, Credit and Global Sponsor Coverage teams, as well as collaborating with multiple other departments across SMBC.
External stakeholders include SMBC’s joint venture partners and third party capital relationships as well as our private equity sponsors and the management teams of our borrowing relationships.
Role sits in the Broadly Syndicated team, which is focused on proactively pitching and executing syndicated transactions (loans and bonds) for our private equity clients.
Role Responsibilities
1. Responsible for financial modelling of transactions
2. Responsible for preparation of credit analysis, typically working in a deal team of 2-4 members
3. Responsible for running key aspects of closing process
4. Preparation of marketing materials for clients, working with senior originators
5. Building an initial network within the leveraged finance and private equity market
6. Provide information to clients on SMFG products and services, including investment products
To be successful in this role, you will need to balance multiple components of a transaction process (eg credit paper, modelling, due diligence, closing mechanics) operating under tight time pressures. You will also need to will also need to learn multiple systems, processes and analytical tools, acting always in compliance with all regulatory and internal policies and procedures, regulations and guidelines.
