Who we are
This is an exciting opportunity to become Legal Counsel at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management (UK) Limited (“SMDAM UK”) a UK investment management firm.
SMDAM UK is a subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management Company Ltd in Japan, which is a global active investment manager, covering a wide range of products including UCITS funds and investment funds with various asset classes including equities, fixed incomes, and alternatives. L&R and RM has the key risk monitoring functions, ensuring that SMDAM risk management policies and procedures are adequate, and meeting with regulatory expectations in complying with all relevant laws, rules and regulations.
Role Summary
The Legal Counsel role is a key hire in support of SMDAM’s plans to significantly expand its asset management activities outside of Japan over the next five years. This expansion will focus on the development of: (1) an existing Luxembourg domiciled UCITS platform and segregated account business focusing on equities and fixed income; and (2) the development and launch of a range of alternative funds (including private credit and infrastructure finance) leveraging the expertise of the wider SMBC Group.

Position Description
The successful candidate will have 5 – 8 years of proven legal experience working in the asset management industry and possess a thorough understanding of the workings and regulation of the investment funds industry, including UCITS, AIFMD and MiFID.

Required experience:
- 5 – 8 years asset management legal experience gained in-house or within private practice (experience ideally in both traditional liquid assets and alternative funds, including private debt)
- Extensive experience and knowledge of the UK and European regulatory regimes relating to asset management, including UCITS, MiFID II and AIFMD and FCA Handbook rules in respect of asset management
Skills:
- Commercial mindset and business acumen in order to take a pragmatic and solutions-focused approach
- Excellent drafting and communication skills
- Attention to detail and strong analytical skills, using initiative to resolve problems
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to engage proactively with colleagues at all levels
- Intellectually curious with a desire to learn and develop skills and experience
- A willingness to challenge/debate and offer own views
- Flexible with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and fluid deadlines.
