Role Summary
We are seeking a Junior Data Modeller to join our Data Platform Delivery Team responsible for supporting the design, development and maintenance of canonical data models that underpin SMBC’s financial systems and reporting capabilities. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a passion for data analysis/modelling for data in financial services sector to learn and grow in a supportive environment. You will work closely with experienced data modellers and architects and collaborate with cross-functional teams to support various data initiatives. The ideal candidate should have a solid foundation in database concepts, strong analytical thinking and willingness to learn enterprise data modelling techniques and tools.
Business Area
The newly created EMEA Data & Analytics Technology team has been put in place to deliver data integration, reporting, and analytics services to the SMBC EMEA business. It exists within the wider ITSD department that is responsible for all IT delivery to the SMBC EMEA enterprise.
The team deliver data and analytics solutions to FO P&L business lines, cross business line departments (eg Finance, Risk, Operations, etc), and the Data Office as a key client. This is within a complex systems environment which has been built over several years and is looking to be re-architected for the next phase of SMBC EMEA growth.
Facts / Scale
- Will be working in team of 40-50 IT staff within a department of 250+
- Will deliver robust, reliable, performant, and maintainable components of the Data Platform for use across the SMBC EMEA entity covering capital markets and corporate banking activities.
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Support the development of robust and flexible physical data model for data platform, working closely with IT and business teams
- Collaborate with data engineers, analysts and business stakeholders to understand data requirements
- Collaborate with team members to map external partner data (clients, products, trades) to internal models
- Help ensure adherence to internal standards and best practices in data modeling
- Document data models and definitions
- Contribute to model reviews and stakeholder discussions
- Learn and apply principles of canonical modeling in financial services data domain
- Stay curious and eager to learn about the business context behind the data
- Collaborate with logical data modellers in Data Management Office
Skills and Qualifications
Essential
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a data-centric environment
- Understanding of data modeling principles (eg: relationships, normalization, star/snowflake schemas)
- Exposure to data modeling tools or formats
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to understand complex data requirements, analyze data sets, and solve data-related problems
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, share ideas, and contribute to group discussions
- Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work with a focus on accuracy and precision
- Interest in or familiarity with banking, capital markets or financial data
Desirable
- Familiarity with SQL or NoSQL data stores
- Experience of data modelling tooling like ER/Studio, Erwin, etc
- Understanding of corporate and investment banking concepts (eg: clients, products, trades)
- Exposure to concepts like Data Lake, Data Mesh, Medallion Architecture
- Experience of Azure Fabric or Databricks or similar
- Exposure to agile delivery practices
- Exposure to tools like JIRA and Confluence
