Role Summary
The purpose of the role is to support the Bank in enhancing its First Line of Defence’s (1LoD) reporting and capability regards (but not limited to): its management of non-financial risks (NFR), risk profile, control environment, and issue management . The role will ultimately contribute to the department’s objective of enhancing governance control.
Business Area
Within the Control Office, MI & Analytics (“the function”), drives the Bank’s 1LoD NFR reporting and analysis capability, and facilitates the development of tooling required to enhance insights into NFR for the 1LoD. The function contributes to one of the Bank’s strategic objectives around enhancing governance and controls. There is a need for a Head of MI & Analytics to contribute to the development of the function, and ultimately, the Bank’s capability.
Position Description
Driving the production of accurate and timely Management Information to support the management of risks and controls in the 1LoD. The MI outputs will be key in enhancing the Bank’s 1LoD’s risk and control governance through the provision of standard reports, dashboards, commentary, and meeting materials.
Analysing NFR data (e.g., Key Risk Indicators, Key Control Indicators, Control Assurance results, and Operational Risk Events) to generate insights on control trends, themes, and areas of concern.
Supporting and facilitating the development of tactical and strategic data and reporting tools and solutions, and the promotion of reporting automation that enhances the 1LoD’s capability to manage NFR.
Supporting the implementation of the strategic GRC tool, ensuring a clear understanding of the data attributes and linkage required in provide appropriate risk and control insights.
To succeed in the role, you’ll need to have:
Extensive experience in designing and producing Management Information (such as reports and dashboards) and presenting complex information so that it can be quickly and easily understood.
Business/Domain Knowledge - basic knowledge of Commercial and Investment Banking products and services. Familiarity with Risk Management frameworks (especially Non-Financial Risks and associated Controls) and an understanding of best practice in 1LoD-led governance of risks and controls.
Market Best Practice – strong awareness of industry best-practice for reporting and analytics, in particular, the tools and techniques required to support user self-service, reduce the cost to produce reports, and enhance the usability and timeliness of Management information.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Analysis. Good analytical skills and inquisitive mindset, able to analyse data to generate insight and recommend action.
• Communication. Strong communication skills. Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation. Able to convey complex topics simply and to articulate issues in a way that eases decision making and drives action.
• Stakeholder Management. Ability to build positive and productive working relationships with stakeholders.
• Technical skills. Proficiency in data analysis tools and software (e.g., Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI).
In addition, the individual will also be responsible for:
• Providing periodic and ad-hoc reporting to support the day-to-day management of the Bank’s control environment.
• Collaborating with reporting and analytics teams across SMBC EMEA to share best practices and minimize duplication of effort between the teams. Supporting initiatives to assess and enhance the risk culture within the 1LoD.
• Assist and support 1LoD Business Control Officers of Corporate Investment Banking, Structured Finance Solutions, Sales & Trading, and Control and Support functions teams in fulfilling their responsibilities.
