Role Summary

  • Member of the Capital and Portfolio Management team, focussed on capital management, portfolio analysis, asset allocation optimisation and ROE modelling enhancements
  • Build asset selection optimisation tools for risk distribution products – SRTs, CRI and Securitisations taking into account capital usage and economic outcome metrics
  • Produce analysis including impact assessment on regulatory and capital rules across EMEA regional regulators (PRA and ECB) and SMBC’s global regulator (JFSA)
  • Support initiatives across the EMEA region related to modelling, advocacy and optimisation of the region’s financial resource utilisation including regulatory capital footprint and generate uplift to the regional ROE level
  • Partner with Product teams across EMEA Departments to develop new products or to improve existing products by providing expert knowledge of capital consumption of the regional portfolio and the regulatory environment and detailed analysis of market trends.
  • Produce and manage customer account plans and work with FO to manage the process by which clients and capital requests are screened and approved by the Client & Capital Strategy Panel (CCSP).

Responsibilities

  • Capital Management:  
    • Review capital calculations across all EMEA’s product sets to ensure continued accuracy within internal model frameworks and an evolving external regulatory capital framework.
    • Develop capital optimisation models and implement enhanced solutions taking into account product structuring, legal entity booking locations and interplay with local regulatory reporting and capital requirements  
  • Stakeholder Management: In collaboration with relevant stakeholders in Finance, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Treasury, Planning and business lines ensure business capital use and profitability improvements are clearly articulated and where possible aligned to other initiatives / projections across the Group.
  • Portfolio analysis:
    • Support SMBC EMEA marketing teams on profitability analysis, deal structuring for capital use optimisation and approval and provide external benchmarks and analysis. Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the approval process is transparent and efficient.
    • Assist with key aspects of the Client & Capital Strategy Panel (CCSP) by coordinating account plans and deal memos with the Front Office, pre‑screening applications and advising on stronger business cases
    • Respond to queries regarding CCSP requirements and provide the Front Office with guidance on technical matters, including RWA, ROE, hurdle rates, and client analytics.
  • Governance and assurance: Adherence to the Group's product development and procedures frameworks, ensuring products and policy are aligned with governance and assurance. Help drive the continual improvement and updating of product and procedure manuals as SME for capital treatment on risk distribution products.
  • Consistency: Ensure all capital treatments and changes are consistent for the business across Economic Capital, Regulatory Capital, Stress Testing, IFRS9 (provisions) and RWA.
  • Market Knowledge:  Remain up to date with regulatory capital developments and act as a focal point for continuing regulatory capital compliance within SMBC EMEA and support wider initiatives across SMBC globally.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Financial

  • Knowledge of regulatory capital modelling
  • Core banking product knowledge: Including but not limited to Corporate Loans, Trade Finance, Project/Transport Finance, Derivatives, Credit Risk Insurance (CRI), SRT’s & Securitisations and portfolio management techniques
  • Knowledge of the components of internal performance measures: Revenue, liquidity, expenses, expected loss and RWA
  • Detailed knowledge of balance sheet & income statement accounting rules (recognition policies)

Regulatory

  • Regulatory capital experience with Basel, specifically knowledge of regulatory environment (Basel, IFRS9)

Project Management

  • Ability to multi-task and be hands on in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
  • Passion for innovation; thorough understanding of new technologies, trade-related IT systems and project management
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration mindset

Problem Solving

  • A detail-oriented problem solver with proven ability to evaluate processes, controls, and issues to determine and assess risks
  • Expert knowledge of Excel: Modelling / simulations / analytical techniques (Other analytical tools beneficial: Python / PowerBI / SQL / Alteryx)
  • Experience controlling large and complex data sets including embedding demonstratable/observable controls around the inputs, processing and outputs
  • Change mind set: Challenge current processes & controls, optimise efficiency / enhance control

Initiative

  • Creative self-starter with strong initiative, ability to take ownership and work independently as well as contribute to the broader team
  • Pro-active professional curiosity: Independently research knowledge gaps. When appropriate read around the subject before reaching out for advice

Communication

  • Strong communication skills including drafting of procedures, presentation materials, and other necessary documents and is comfortable liaising with FO and stakeholders across the bank.
