Role Summary
Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Control Officer - MI, Analytics & Governance for our EMEA Control Office to join our team.
The MI, Analytics & Governance team act as a centre of excellence for management information, reporting and analytics for the EMEA Control Office and play a key role in risk management for all Departments and locations within the region.
The EMEA Control Office is being established in order to improve the risk management capability in the 1st Line of Defence (1LoD) within SMBC EMEA. A project has been initiated to uplift the Non-Financial Risk Framework and enhance the operating model – which includes creating a Control Office in the 1LoD to (i) support the initial implementation of the revised framework, and (ii) to drive enhancements to risk management on an ongoing basis across the region.

Position Description
The core responsibilities of the MI, Analytics & Governance Control Officer are:
• Assist in producing accurate and timely Management Information to support the management of risks and controls in the 1LoD.Support the 1LoD risk and control governance through the provision of standard reports, dashboards and meeting materials.
• Analyse “risk data” (e.g., Key Risk Indicators, Key Control Indicators, Control Assurance results and information on Issues and Operational Events) to generate insight such as identifying trends, themes and areas of concern.
• Provide ad-hoc reporting to, for example, support the day-to-day management of the control environment.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of the MI and Analytics capability through the development and use of automated reporting and analysis tools.
In addition, the Control Officer, MI, Analytics & Governance is also responsible for:
• Collaborating with reporting and analytics teams across SMBC EMEA to share best practices and minimize duplication of effort between the teams. Supporting initiatives to assess and enhance the risk culture within the 1LoD.Assisting the 2LoD with the development and implementation of risk policy and risk frameworks and helping them execute their responsibilities to provide oversight of the 1LoD.
• Supporting the Head of MI, Analytics & Governance in various projects and initiatives as needed.
• Assist and support 1LoD BCOs of CIB, SFS, S&T, and Control and Support functions teams in fulfilling their Business Control Office responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Management Information. Experience in designing and producing Management Information (such as reports and dashboards); able to present complex information so that it can be quickly and easily understood.
• Analysis. Good analytical skills and inquisitive mindset, able to analyse data to generate insight and recommend action.
• Business/Domain Knowledge. Basic knowledge of Commercial and Investment Banking products and services. Familiarity with Risk Management frameworks (especially Non-Financial Risks and associated Controls).
• Market Best Practice. Awareness of industry best-practice for reporting and analytics – particularly tools and techniques to support user self-service, reduce the cost to produce reports, and enhance the usability and timeliness of information. Understanding of best practice in 1LoD-led governance of risks and controls.
• Communication. Strong communication skills. Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation. Able to convey complex topics simply and to articulate issues in a way that eases decision making and drives action.
• Stakeholder Management. Ability to build positive and productive working relationships with stakeholders.
• Technical skills. Proficiency in data analysis tools and software (e.g., Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI).
Specific requirements:
• Highly numerate with a strong analytical skill set. Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline (e.g., mathematics, physics, engineering, technology, data science, finance, accounting, business analytics, information systems, statistics, economics, or a related field).
• Some experience in a similar role within a financial services environment is preferred.
