Role Summary
Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Vice President for our Compliance Department to join our team.
The SFS Compliance adviser is responsible for providing Compliance advice to the SFS vertical in London. The role ensures that SMBC Group entities in the UK and EMEA maintain a robust compliance culture, meet regulatory expectations, and deliver positive outcomes for clients and markets. This includes anticipating regulatory developments, supporting new product initiatives, and embedding compliance considerations into business strategy and operations.
This role requires a strong understanding of the regulatory landscape affecting wholesale banking, including but not limited to Conduct Risk, MiFID II, MAR, and ESG-related regulations. The role also involves close collaboration with global compliance counterparts in Tokyo, APAC, and the Americas to ensure alignment on cross-border matters and global compliance standards.
The SFS Compliance adviser acts as a subject matter expert, contributing to the development of a strong compliance framework and risk-aware culture across the SFS business.
Business Area
The Compliance Advisory function for the Structured Finance Solutions (SFS) vertical plays a critical role in ensuring that the Bank operates within the regulatory frameworks applicable to its Structured Finance activities. This includes providing expert compliance advice and guidance to the Front, Middle, and Back Offices across a broad range of SFS products and services, including but not limited to structured finance, project finance and advisory, and leveraged finance.
Position Description
- Provide expert advice on the application of relevant rules and regulations to SFS business activities.
- Promote a strong compliance culture across the Universal Bank and engaging proactively with business stakeholders to mitigate compliance risks.
- Develop and deliver training materials in collaboration with the Compliance Education and Communications team, tailored to SFS business areas.
- Investigate potential or actual breaches of relevant rules and regulations, assist in reporting to senior management and regulators, and support remediation efforts.
- Serve as an SME/advisor to the business and support functions on private side products and services, including lending, structured finance, and advisory.
- Collaborate with other Compliance teams to design and implement an effective Compliance Risk Assessment program, contribute to the Annual Compliance Plan, and support the Compliance Monitoring program.
- Maintain and update Compliance Policies, Departmental Procedures, and internal processes to reflect evolving regulatory requirements and business practices.
- Support the review of new products, cross-border activities, marketing materials, and other business initiatives from a compliance perspective.
- Assist with internal and external audits and regulatory examinations, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
- Represent SMBC in industry working groups and contribute to external consultations on regulatory developments relevant to private side activities.
- Participate in and contribute to EMEA-wide compliance projects and strategic initiatives as needed.
