Role Summary

Are you ready to take the next step in your career with SMBC Group EMEA? We are seeking a Quantitative Risk Analyst / AVP to join our Modelling Team within the Risk Management Department.

Reporting to the Head of Modelling Group and based in our London office at 100 Liverpool Street, this role will be responsible for the development, monitoring, and maintenance of internal and vendor models used for Climate Risk assessment across the EMEA region. The successful candidate will ensure that these models comply with the latest PRA, EBA and ECB regulatory expectations, as well as internal Model Risk Management standards. This role also provides exposure to the Bank's ICAAP, ICARA, IFRS9 and other strategic initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be a strong team player with excellent attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and solid experience in credit risk analytics and modelling within financial services. Proficiency in Python and MS Excel is essential. A good understanding of climate related regulatory requirements and climate risk modelling is highly desirable.

Business Area

This role sits within the Modelling vertical of Credit Portfolio, Policy & Modelling Group within Risk Management Department (RMD) at SMBC BI. The team is responsible for the quantification of Credit, Operational, Market, Counterparty, Liquidity and Climate Change risks for both internal and regulatory purposes, as well as for the development and maintenance of the Model Risk Management Framework across the EMEA region. The role holder will primarily support the development, execution, monitoring, and documentation of Climate Risk models, ensuring all outputs meet regulatory, governance and audit standards.

Position Description

Purpose of the Job

Climate change represents one of the most critical challenges facing the global financial system today, with its potential impacts becoming increasingly apparent. Its financial impacts are becoming increasingly evident, prompting UK and EU regulators to introduce climate stress testing and scenario analysis exercises to assess the resilience of the banks and insurers. In response, we have proactively enhanced our climate risk frameworks and methodologies to align with emerging regulatory expectations and industry best practices. This role will play a key part in ensuring that our climate stress testing and scenario analysis methodologies remain robust, forward-looking, and compliant with regulatory standards.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

· Develop, document, execute and monitor Climate Risk models for various SMBC entities across the EMEA region, ensuring compliance with regulatory expectations and internal policy.

· Support the quantification of climate risk for regulatory reporting and internal capital assessments, including ICAAP, ICARA and other internal initiatives.

· Produce climate adjusted ECL figures for IFRS9 provisioning and stress test outputs for ICAAP /ICARA, together with high quality technical documentations.

· Contribute to the development of innovative modelling approaches for climate risk scenario analysis, enhancing the current methodology framework.

· Present analyses and model outputs to a wide range of stakeholders, including senior management, working groups and risk committees.

· Engage with external auditors, regulators, internal validation team and external data vendors for model reviews, benchmarking, and data assessments.

· Support adherence to the Model Risk Management Framework and respond to challenges raised during independent model validation exercises.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

· Experience in credit risk analytics, quantitative modelling, or quantitative research within financial services.

· Strong problem-solving skills using logical reasoning and analytical techniques.

· Advanced Python proficiency, with strong capabilities in data processing and modelling.

· Excellent Excel Skills.

· BSc/MSc Degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g. Mathematics, Engineering, Finance, Economics, etc.)

· Familiarity with climate risk regulatory expectations and climate scenario analysis modelling frameworks.
