Role Summary
We’re looking for an Associate for our Strategic Planning Department to join our team.
This role supports the bank’s compliance and business functions by helping manage risks and resolve issues in line with internal policies.
You’ll work closely with control & support function and escalate key matters to senior management, contributing to smooth and compliant operations.
In this role you will:
- To support Front Offices of the Bank to comply with applicable laws & regulations including opining on the adequacy & effectiveness of control processes and following up with management on issues identified.
- To conduct any work required for the operation of Control & Administration Group of Strategic Planning Department.
- To coordinate with senior management, other departments and offices, and SMBC Head office as necessary.
For you to succeed in the role, you’ll need to have:
- Basic understanding of corporate and investment banking with a keen interest in the financial industry
- Strong communication (verbal and written) both in English and Japanese
Business Area
- To work under the direction of Head of Control & Administration Group
- Handling regular reporting requirements, irregular incidents, regulatory inspection matters, internal audit and reports to Head Office in cooperation with any other relevant departments/offices
- Close liaison, coordination and co-working with Tokyo Head Office Compliance & Administration Team and any other Head Office departments.
- Close liaison, coordination and co-working with Compliance Departments team as necessary.
Position Description
About this role:
- As a regulated financial institution, the Bank has a regulatory obligation to establish and maintain policies, procedures, systems, and controls to mitigate and effectively manage compliance risks, while maximizing business performance. Naturally there is possibility of facing the situation of conflict of interest, difference in risk appetite, incidents and issues coming from the business and risk mitigating measures and problem solution need to be sought/considered.
- The role of Head of Control & Administration Group of STPD/STPDE is to manage the group to support the bank’s business in compliance with the applicable policies and procedures in the bank by liaising with control function, assisting to solve issues and escalating significant matters to senior management
Our role will allow you to:
- Assist the Head of Control & Admin in carrying out certain activities related to regulatory matters and collaboration within EMEA Division
- Create/Review various (English and/or Japanese) reports and submitting them to management within required time frame.
- Support regular reporting to senior management and committees- e.g. helping to draft periodic reporting, board updates, etc.
- Supporting management of irregular incidents, monitoring on the internal/external auditors requests and recommendation
- Assisting the team when dealing with matters in relation to Japanese FSA, PRA, FCA, and other regulatory authorities in EMEA
- Coordinate well with stakeholders in other teams and departments including Tokyo Head Office
What will you bring:
- Basic understanding of corporate and investment banking with a keen interest in the financial industry
- Strong communication (verbal and written) both in English and Japanese
- Microsoft Office 365 suite: strong Excel and Powerpoint capability
- Ability to present professionally in small groups and participate in meetings in person if required
- Good attention to detail
- Ability to prioritise, manage time effectively and work under pressure
- Confident interpersonal skills
