Role Summary

Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for an Account Manager (Assistant Vice President) to join our Specialised Products Department – Large Cap Leveraged Finance Portfolio Management team in London.

 

This role is focused on ensuring the effective, proactive management of our European Corporate Leverage Portfolio, whilst also managing selected European Large Cap Leveraged Finance Borrowers, to manage the associated credit risks and ensure any material adverse developments are reported in a timely manner to key stakeholders.

 

The role includes responsibility for managing leveraged loan exposures and supporting ancillary banking products including Derivatives, Trade Finance, Deposits and Working Capital Facilities.

 

The primary objectives are to:

  • proactively manage our portfolio of European Corporate Leverage Borrowers across multiple products, including Leveraged Loans, Derivatives, Trade Finance and other ancillary facilities, whilst also managing selected European Large Cap Leveraged Finance Borrowers.
  • work closely with our Corporate Leverage Origination, Sponsor Coverage and Origination colleagues to help drive new business opportunities from the existing portfolio.
  • support the identification, execution and ongoing management of financing opportunities arising from the portfolio, including leveraged loans, refinancings, ancillary product opportunities (FX, Derivatives, Trade Finance, Deposits and Working Capital Facilities) and proactive asset recycling activities.
  • support the wider Large Cap Leveraged Finance team in maintaining selected borrower and sponsor relationships on allocated sponsor-backed portfolio accounts where appropriate.

 

Ideally we are looking for a candidate with:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the European Leveraged Finance market.
  • Sound credit / risk analysis skills gained preferably through exposure to European leveraged finance transactions, with an ability to analyse / interpret Audited/Unaudited Historic Financial Statements, Financial Due Diligence, forward looking financial data (Budgets, Forecasts, Projections etc.) along with Cash Flow modelling skills and sound knowledge of Excel.
  • Knowledge of ancillary banking products including Derivatives, Trade Finance, Deposits and Working Capital Facilities.
  • Good Communication Skills with an ability to work as part of a team both internally within SPD and outside SPD with other parts of the Bank.

 

The anticipated salary range for this role is £75,000 - £113,000, with the final offer determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, role scope, location, and relevant market factors. In addition to base salary, the role may be eligible for a discretionary incentive award and a competitive benefits package, including core benefits such as pension provision.

Business Area

This role, based in London, offers hands-on responsibility for managing a high-profile European Corporate Leverage portfolio whilst also providing exposure to selected European Large Cap Leveraged Finance Borrowers.

The role includes responsibility for managing leveraged loan exposures alongside ancillary banking products including Derivatives, Trade Finance, Deposits and Working Capital Facilities.

It combines deep credit expertise with commercial exposure and the opportunity to contribute directly to portfolio growth and revenues by supporting informed decision-making across the department and strengthening collaboration between Portfolio Management, Origination, Sponsor Coverage, Product Partners and Credit.

Position Description

The primary objectives are to:

  • proactively manage our portfolio of European Corporate Leverage Borrowers across multiple products, including Leveraged Loans, Derivatives, Trade Finance and other ancillary facilities, whilst also managing selected European Large Cap Leveraged Finance Borrowers. This requires the first level credit / financial / risk analysis to be undertaken within SPD and to be presented to Credit Sanctioning Department.
  • work closely with our Corporate Leverage Origination, Sponsor Coverage and Origination colleagues to help drive new business opportunities from the existing portfolio.
  • support the identification, execution and ongoing management of financing opportunities arising from the portfolio including leveraged loans, refinancings, ancillary product opportunities (FX, Derivatives, Trade Finance, Deposits and Working Capital Facilities) and proactive asset recycling activities.
  • support the wider Large Cap Leveraged Finance team in maintaining selected borrower and sponsor relationships on allocated sponsor-backed portfolio accounts where appropriate.

Under the guidance and support of a VP and/or Director, the role also entails ongoing / close interaction with and reporting to key internal and external stakeholders.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Portfolio Management: With support from a VP and/or Director, pro-actively manage a portfolio of European Corporate Leverage Borrowers and selected Large Cap Leveraged Finance Borrowers across leveraged loans and ancillary banking products, including:

 

  • ongoing analysis of a Borrower’s financial performance;
  • the preparation of required Monitoring Reports;
  • regular reporting to Line Manager, Group Head, SPD Management and Credit Department on Borrower’s performance;
  • assigning / reviewing Borrower internal ratings at least annually; and
  • analysis / interpretation of Bank’s Cash Flow Model.

 

New Business: Ongoing liaison with Corporate Leverage Origination, Sponsor Coverage, Origination, Loan Capital Markets and Product Partners on Portfolio Origination to drive new business opportunities arising from the portfolio, including being part of SPD Leveraged Finance Deal Teams, pitching activities / idea generation, ancillary product opportunities (FX, Derivatives, Trade Finance, Deposits and Working Capital Facilities) and proactive asset recycling activities.

 

Credit Analysis: Conducting in depth financial / credit analysis of transactions and the preparation of Credit submissions for:

  • new transactions arising from the portfolio working as part of an SPD Leveraged Finance Deal Team;
  • amendments / waivers on existing allocated portfolio accounts; and
  • add-on / re-financing opportunities on existing allocated portfolio accounts.

Role also includes the presentation of recommendations to SPD Management and Credit Department.

 

Relationship Management: Supporting the maintenance of relationships on selected sponsor-backed Large Cap Leveraged Finance portfolio accounts through working closely with the London-based Directors on the team to:

  • ensure the team are up to date with developments at portfolio companies; and
  • support the identification of new business opportunities arising from the portfolio.

 

Execution: Liaison with all Back and Middle Office teams (Limit Control, Loans Admin, Static Data, KYC etc.) to ensure satisfaction of all internal booking and operational requirements necessary to successfully book transactions.

 

Compliance: Compliance with all regulatory and internal policies and procedures, regulations and guidelines.
