Role Summary

Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Executive Director for our Global Transaction Bankng Department to join our team. 

  • The Business Management and In- Business Risk Head is a senior leadership role responsible for enabling the delivery of strategic priorities across EMEA Transaction Banking (TB).
  • This role ensures strong end-to-end controls, disciplined business management, and effective governance.
  • The position partners with global and regional stakeholders to shape and execute the strategic agenda, drive financial performance, and lead a high-performing team.

Business Area

  • There are currently c.30 members in GTBD EMEA team including Planning, Sales and Product Development team.
  • The current business in EMEA is focused predominantly on servicing Japanese multi-national corporates trading in EMEA. However, we are looking to improve the client proposition to all clients and expand it to non-Japanese clients.
  • We are on a mission to upgrade our capabilities and client reach and have a number of projects to deliver this.

Background

  • The Bank’s primary objectives are to grow its Corporate and Investment Banking business by (1) improving the NIM on its loan portfolio and quality of the deposit base, (2) driving the financing collaboration between private and public side markets as well as via the Jefferies alliance and (3) recycling capital. This hire into its GTBD business is crucial for point (1) of the strategy.
  • GTBD is in charge of Transaction Banking Business (“TB”) in EMEA, which provides an integrated suite of cash management services to address the various needs of corporate and institutional clients. From the interactive online banking channel “E-Moneyger®”, our key product, to Host-to-Host and SWIFT connectivity, or regional and domestic Cash Pooling, we are helping the Bank's clients to maximise their efficiency and streamline financial operations.
    We offer corporates and institutions:
    convenient, efficient and secure real-time online banking, ability to support domestic and international transfers and collections, access to high value and low value clearing systems, support by regional and in-country cash management specialists across EMEA providing local advisory and sharing best practices.
  • The job is focused on driving projects to enable the growth of transaction banking business, our customer reach and to increase deposit volumes and profit, and contribute to the growth of the TB business in both EMEA and SMBC group globally

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Strategy & Execution

  • Working with the co-GM’s and senior leadership team shape and align EMEA TB strategy with global and cluster priorities.
  • Define and embed performance metrics and standards.
  • Lead execution of strategic priorities and track performance.
  • Own and manage the business governance framework
  • Lead strategic programs and initiatives.

Governance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with business and legal governance requirements.
  • Partner with Controls, Product, and Operations teams to fulfil regulatory deliverables and ensure a pristine Risk and Control environment.
  • Represent TB EMEA at senior governance forums.

Financial Performance

  • Build and track financial plans in collaboration with finance and business partners.
  • Analyse financial performance and identify drivers and risks.
  • Lead investment planning and expense optimisation initiatives.
  • Manage headcount, expense approvals, and BAU administration.

Client & Growth

  • Collaborate with Sales to define and track client growth and profitability.
  • Oversee client performance metrics and pricing models.
  • Drive disciplined pipeline management and wallet share growth.

Performance Management & Business Administration

  • Coordinate business reviews and produce high-quality presentations.
  • Leverage data for strategic insights and competitive benchmarking.
  • Deliver timely reporting and KPI tracking.
  • Identify risks and opportunities with actionable plans.

People & Organisation

  • Lead and develop a high-performing EMEA Business Execution team.
  • Foster a meritocratic and empathetic work environment.
  • Drive organisational design and change initiatives.
  • Support employee engagement and communication efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Relevant Degree or Banking qualifications
  • Leadership, team management, communication and liaison skills
  • Extensive experience in financial services, ideally in transaction banking.
  • Proven track record of execution in high-pressure environments.
  • Strong understanding of controls, risk, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience leading diverse, high-performing teams.
  • Ability to challenge the status quo and drive change.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Self motivated and well trusted by team members as well as front office members.
  • Knowledge on transaction banking business and services SMBC Group provide.
