Role Summary
Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Director to join our team.
- You will report to the team co- head and has responsibility for a specific client portfolio within the UK/ Ireland Corporate Banking business. The Corporate Banking Division 2 ("CBD2") business is spread across a number of industry sectors including Regulated businesses, Industrials, Aerospace & Defence, Real Estate, Metals and Mining, Consumer and Sub IG.
- The role of Director exists to act as primary contact to manage the corporate finance aspects of the relationship with clients, whilst also acting as the gateway to other product partners across the Bank.
Business Area
- SMBC Group’s relationship model is anchored on creating a global single point of contact for our customers, the Relationship Manager for the customer to best access and utilise SMBC’s global network.
- Corporate Banking Department 2 (“CBD2”) has responsibility for coverage of European corporates across the major regions of UK, Ireland, Germany and France, as well as Northern, Southern Europe and CEE.
- CBD2 strategy is to grow the business in a profitable way, managing returns and balance sheet, by focusing on corporate and investment banking cross-sell (CIB) including capital markets, derivatives, investment banking and further origination and distribution of our loan book.
Position Description
Line management of junior staff and involve the management of multiple transaction and deal teams of internal and external staff in changing and high-pressure situations to tight deadlines.
- The Director has shared responsibility in delivering the team budget. Achievement will be measured against both income and other targets including profitability (return on equity), effective management of risk weighted assets and funded asset allocation.
- Main interfaces/relationships with:
- CBD2 Teams and department members up to department head level.
- Credit sanctioning, operations, legal, other marketing departments and product teams.
- Other SMBC EMEA offices and global offices where there are subsidiary banking relationships.
- Work on numerous transactions each year in both arrangement and participation roles.
- The role will involve new business development in allocated areas and relationship and portfolio management.
- Lead day-to-day relationship management, with typical interaction at group treasurer level.
- Individual will be required to set account plan strategy, lead marketing activities, conduct origination of new business and execution of transactions.
- Coordination with product partners is an important part of the role, including working with front office teams including, investment banking, derivatives, trade finance, project finance, FX and transaction banking teams amongst others.
- Lead deal teams in the marketing, origination and execution of transactions.
- Coordinate the preparation of credit applications in conjunction with the front office credit team (note – credit analysis is undertaken by a separate team) and help to train and supervise more junior staff in that role.
- Liaise with all relevant departments within EMEA required for marketing and execution including Credit, OAD, CPD, legal, Capital Markets, LCM, Trade Finance, other regions and SMFG businesses globally.
- Understanding the Bank’s internal procedures and processes, and relevant regulations and compliance matters and applying them correctly and in compliance with all rules and regulations and monitoring and supporting junior staff in doing so.
- Team management responsibilities for junior staff.
- Provide strategic and business development support to senior management in delivering the team, unit and department’s budget and objectives.
- Extensive knowledge of corporate finance across UK/ Ireland client base, including ability to generate new ideas and content to market to clients.
- Previous experience of working in corporate finance.
- Ability to work with and understand customer needs – the individual would be expected to have its own network of customers and other industry players.
- Execution of corporate finance transactions is handled within the department and supported by several functions. The candidate should have a good understanding of LMA documentation in addition to knowledge of other financing approaches such as project finance, leasing, trade finance, asset finance and capital market instruments.
- Proactive, can-do approach with a strong sense of accountability.
- Excellent numerical and financial skills.
- Management of multiple tasks in parallel under pressure and to time constraints with significant changes.
- Degree level education and/or equivalent experience.
- Strong communication skills required as there will be various interfaces both within the wider SMFG organisation locally (marketing & support departments), across EMEA and globally as well as externally. Effective management of own time and that of other staff and resources in a changing and challenging environment.
