Role Summary
GTBD manages transaction banking in EMEA, offering electronic banking and cash management services to corporate and institutional clients. This role supports GTBD management in maintaining a strong risk and control environment by driving the implementation of the bank’s risk framework and overseeing key processes such as RCSA, remediation tracking, and risk reporting. Acting as the primary liaison with the Business Control Office and other control functions, the position leads governance forums, ensures policy alignment, and facilitates effective issue resolution. The role also builds strong stakeholder relationships, provides operational support and training, and helps enhance workflow efficiency across the business.

SMBC's Global Transaction Banking provides cash management and digital banking services that enable efficient liquidity, payments, and treasury operations - from electronic banking and Host-to-Host connections to advanced reconciliation tools. Our digital platform, E-Moneyger®, provides secure, real-time access to account information and payment functionalities, empowering efficient cash flow management and operational oversight.
Key Responsibilities
Risk & Control Framework Management
• Support GTBD management in maintaining a robust risk and control environment across all elements of the Risk and Control framework.
• Serve as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert to senior management and business leaders on internal controls and risk management matters.
• Act as the main liaison for the Business Control Office, supporting implementation of the bank’s risk and control framework, including Risk Control Self Assessments.
• Ensure risk status and remediation actions are documented and resolved within agreed timelines.
• Ensure the Management Control Framework is well documented and quarterly sampling is conducted across the business.
• Escalate critical issues to GTBD management in a timely manner.
Governance, Reporting & Oversight
• Prepare and deliver regular risk reporting and metrics to senior management and governance committees.
• Organise and lead monthly Risk and Controls forums to review issues and drive resolution.
• Partner with Internal Audit and Second Line Risk functions to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and internal policies.as well in scoping, testing and remediation of control activities.
• Oversee the maintenance of control documentation (e.g. control libraries, process maps, risk registers) and ensure they remain current and aligned with entity and group standards.
• Serve as the primary liaison between GTBD and Legal department, coordinating the review and approval of all cash management–related agreements and documentation.
• Produce executive-level summary reports, risk insights, and thematic analysis to inform decision-making.
Stakeholder Engagement & Support
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders.
• Provide troubleshooting, customer support, advice, product knowledge, and workflow improvement suggestions.
• Identify risks and provide recommendations where possible.
• Embed a proactive controls culture across GTBD through education, training, communication and engagement with team members.
Operational & Administrative Support
• Perform ad‑hoc operational and administrative tasks as required.
Knowledge and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree/MBA
• Minimum 10 years of experience in financial sector and within a risk and control area, preferably transaction banking.
• Sound understanding of risk management frameworks and control environments.
• Experience of identifying and addressing deficiencies in risk management and/or control operations across the full product lifecycle and end-to-end processes.
• Good knowledge of Electronic Banking (“EB”), Cash Management products and Liquidity Management solutions.
• Solid understanding and awareness of market standard approaches for risk mitigation, control design and execution. Familiarity with relevant regulation and regulatory expectations across EMEA.
• Proven ability in conflict resolution and overseeing project development through effective project management.
• Proficient in delivering clear, structured and logical presentations to management and stakeholders.
• Collaborative, people-centric leader skilled at enabling others to perform their best.
• Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in decision making while maintaining high standards of integrity.
• Open to new sources of information with the ability to make timely decisions.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office as well as familiarity with data analytics and reporting tools (e.g. Power BI).
• Ability to speak/write Japanese desirable, but not essential.
