We're looking for a Vice President for our Regulatory Affairs Department to join our team.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in one of the most significant regulatory milestones in SMBC Bank EU AG's evolution. As the bank transitions to direct supervision by the European Central Bank (ECB), you will help shape and strengthen regulatory governance, build strategic relationships with supervisory authorities and contribute to establishing a best-in-class regulatory affairs function within a growing European banking institution.

About this role

The Regulatory Affairs Department serves as the central point of coordination for SMBC EU's interactions with the European Central Bank (ECB), Single Resolution Board (SRB) and other regulatory authorities. The team plays a critical role in ensuring effective supervisory engagement, promoting regulatory excellence and supporting the bank's ability to meet the expectations of a directly supervised European financial institution.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the planning, coordination and execution of SMBC EU's ECB Onboarding programme, ensuring the timely delivery of regulatory requirements and effective engagement across the organisation.
  • Managing day-to-day interactions with the ECB following onboarding, including the coordination of supervisory requests, regulatory deliverables, meetings and ongoing supervisory priorities.
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with key regulatory stakeholders, including the ECB Joint Supervisory Team (JST), the Single Resolution Board (SRB), BaFin, Bundesbank and other National Competent Authorities.
  • Coordinating regulatory inspections, stress testing exercises, supervisory reviews, questionnaires and other ad hoc regulatory initiatives across the bank.
  • Monitoring regulatory developments and analysing emerging supervisory expectations, providing guidance and insight to support regulatory compliance and preparedness.
  • Acting as a liaison with SMBC Group Regulatory Affairs and supporting the coordination of regulatory initiatives, supervisory colleges and group-wide regulatory matters.
  • Partnering with stakeholders across Risk, Finance, Compliance, Regulatory Reporting and business functions to ensure consistent, high-quality regulatory engagement and communication.

The anticipated salary range for this role is €78,000 - €118,000, with the final offer determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, role scope, location, and relevant market factors. In addition to base salary, the role may be eligible for a discretionary incentive award and a competitive benefits package, including core benefits such as pension provision.

Profile Description

For you to succeed in this role

  • University degree in Law, Economics, Finance, Business Administration or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience within banking, regulatory affairs, regulatory reporting, risk management, compliance or a related financial services environment, including experience supporting interactions with banking regulators.
  • Strong understanding of European banking regulation, supervisory frameworks and regulatory governance, ideally including exposure to ECB, SRB or National Competent Authority engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating complex regulatory deliverables across multiple stakeholders and managing challenging regulatory deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to prepare regulatory submissions, executive-level materials and briefing documents.

  • Resilience and adaptability, with the ability to perform effectively in a dynamic and evolving regulatory environment.
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability, with the confidence to work autonomously and drive initiatives forward.

Desirable

  • Previous experience working directly with the ECB, SRB, BaFin, Bundesbank or other banking supervisory authorities.
  • Knowledge of Finance, Regulatory Reporting, Risk Management, Credit Risk, Compliance or Data Governance within a banking environment.
