We're looking for a Compliance Monitoring Manager (Vice President) for our Compliance Department to join our team in Frankfurt or Düsseldorf.
This role offers the opportunity to lead a team within an independent second line of defence function and contribute directly to the effectiveness of SMBC EU’s compliance framework. You will oversee the delivery of risk-based monitoring reviews, provide assurance over key regulatory and financial crime controls, and work closely with stakeholders across the three lines of defence to support strong governance and sustainable remediation.
About this role
The Compliance Monitoring & Surveillance team independently assesses whether the Bank’s processes and controls are designed and operating effectively in line with regulatory obligations. Reporting to the Head of Monitoring & Surveillance, this role leads the Financial Crime Monitoring team and supports the planning, execution, and ongoing development of the Compliance Monitoring Plan.
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Supporting the development and ongoing prioritisation of the Compliance Monitoring Plan, with a particular focus on Financial Crime topics
- Independently scoping, planning, and delivering risk-based monitoring reviews in accordance with established procedures and quality standards
- Assessing control effectiveness, documenting findings, identifying root causes, and agreeing proportionate remediation actions with stakeholders
- Overseeing the progress and quality of reviews delivered by the Financial Crime Monitoring team, including first-level review of working papers and stakeholder communications
- Managing three direct reports, including objective setting, performance management, coaching, workload allocation, and professional development
- Monitoring remediation plans, assessing closure evidence, and escalating overdue actions, control weaknesses, or material risks where appropriate
- Preparing management information and governance reporting, while supporting Compliance projects and deputising for the Head of Monitoring & Surveillance when required
The anticipated salary range for this role is €78,000 - €118,000, with the final offer determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, role scope, location, and relevant market factors. In addition to base salary, the role may be eligible for a discretionary incentive award and a competitive benefits package, including core benefits such as pension provision.
Profile Description
For you to succeed in this role
- Degree-level education, preferably in Finance, Law, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related discipline; relevant professional qualifications would be advantageous
- Proven experience in Compliance Monitoring, Internal Audit, Risk Assurance, or a comparable testing and assurance function within financial services
- Strong knowledge of Financial Crime Compliance, including Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Terrorist Financing, associated risks, controls, and regulatory expectations
- Demonstrated experience independently managing the full lifecycle of monitoring or audit reviews, from scoping and testing through to findings, reporting, and remediation follow-up
- Previous people management or team leadership experience, including reviewing team outputs and supporting professional development
- Fluent English; German skills would be an asset

Desirable
- Detailed knowledge of German and European Financial Crime regulations and the wider emerging regulatory landscape
- Experience coordinating a Financial Crime Monitoring programme or managing a specialist monitoring team
- Exposure to regulatory remediation programmes, compliance technology solutions, or monitoring methodology enhancements
- Professional certification in Compliance, Financial Crime, Audit, or Risk Management, such as ACAMS, ICA, CIA, or an equivalent qualification
