Role Summary

Is the next step in your career atSMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Compliance Manager / VP for our Central Compliance Group to join our team.

 

The role of Compliance Manager is required to protect SMBC Bank EU AG and its employees from regulatory censure and ensure positive outcomes for its customers and markets by enabling the business to meet its risk preferences and statements relating to compliance risks and embed a compliance culture in the firms’ day-to-day activities.

 

The key role of the Compliance Manager is to:

  • Act in role of trusted advisor for compliance matters across the relevant product areas through specialised regulatory knowledge and interpretation of the rules;
  • Be a key member of the Central Compliance team to progress and communicate the department’s Conduct Risk Agenda;
  • Get involved in ad hoc (EMEA) Compliance and firm wide projects as required on behalf of Compliance by taking ownership of deliverables as well as acting as the compliance subject matter expert.

 

Main candidate requirements:

  • Demonstrated understanding of relevant existing and expected regulations for a universal bank and experience of advising businesses on how to comply with laws, rules and regulations, as well as investigating potential or actual breaches.
  • Experience managing projects, creating project plans, tracking statuses, and reporting issues to management, with demonstrated successful track record of utilizing project management documentation and related reporting tools.
  • Experience working in a Compliance Advisory role covering either banking products / services or trading / capital markets businesses, or conducting Compliance Risk Assessments is a strong plus.

Business Area

The Compliance Department liaises with compliance teams throughout the Group to ensure compliance with regards to German / EU matters and the fulfilment of specific tasks under SLAs with EMEA entities, as applicable. The role-holder supports the Central Compliance Function and is ultimately a member of the EMEA team and contributes to set the department strategy in line with SMBC / Nikko Tokyo and other relevant SMFG offices while supporting the business’s initiatives.

 

As SMBC EU must demonstrate its own local governance requirements, it cannot solely rely on the respective teams of other SMBC group companies. The role holder must therefore liaise closely with the relevant counterparts and key stakeholders, in the EMEA region in particular.

 

Central Compliance is responsible for acting as key point of Compliance contact for the business and helps by advising and interpreting rules. It also provides the methodology framework for Compliance and Compliance Advisory also engages and promotes close collaboration with other SMFG entities globally, in particular those that engage in or perform activities impacting the Securities and Trading activities.

Position Description

To support the Bank’s sustainable growth strategic approach, the Compliance Manager / VP, as a conduct and product expert is responsible for managing compliance risks, defining and managing key risk indicators and booking controls and advising on capital markets products, corporate banking and securitisation. These product areas require proactive and effective interaction, and the role is expected to act as a subject matter expert and provide credible challenge to a range of stakeholders including senior management.

 

In addition, the role holder is expected to contribute to the comprehensive policy and methodology framework and to assist with the continuous enhancements to the design and methodology of the Compliance Risk Assessments framework. It also includes the tracking of status of initiative, projects, and milestones and circulate information in weekly and status reports, as needed, including escalating to management and relevant stakeholders on potential issues and development, and tracking / reporting tools to facilitate effective and efficient management status reporting for development and maintenance compliance programs.
