Role Summary
Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for an Executive Director (m/f/d) for our AML and Financial Crime Unit to join our team.
The EMEA Division of SMBC includes SMBC Bank International plc, SMBC Bank EU AG and SMBC Nikko Capital Markets Limited (and other subsidiaries and affiliates) and provides Commercial and Investment Banking services to a wide client base across Europe, Middle East and Africa. With its headquarters in London, it has offices and branch locations in 17 countries and a headcount of > 3,000 staff. EMEA Operations comprises circa 800 staff, located in 7 countries across the region.
The purpose of this role is to support the build out of a 1LoD capability across all Financial Crime domains within SMBC Bank EU AG (SMBC EU), whilst dual hatting as the Client Lifecycle Management (CLM) Business Service Owner for EMEA. The role will be responsible for:
- Leading on the implementation of a revised CDD Operating Model across EMEA entities, branches, affiliates and representative offices.
- Establish a 1LoD capability with SMBU EU AG in recognition of the growth ambitions of the EU AG entity.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities
- Work with all departments and branches in SMBC EMEA and will be asked to be involved in a wide variety of initiatives that supports the objective of creating a bank where the client is at the centre of everything we do.
- Leading the implementation of the end-to-end Business Service Framework for the 5 stages of the Client Lifecycle in EMEA, working with other Business Service owners to ensure consistency of approach and design.
- Lead the development of the Client Selection and Offboarding Framework
- Act as deputy for the Head of Financial Crime Management Group where required, acting as main point of contact for all colleagues on various Financial Crime & CLM linked initiatives.
- Work with minimal supervision across complex tasks or assignments and over time develops areas of expertise that contribute to achieving the strategy.
- Act as Client Data Owner, working across Data Governance and Data Quality to ensure good quality customer data is available for all Financial Crime processes.
- Responsible for completing assigned tasks within the agreed timeframe, self-manage all day-to-day standard activity tasks.
- Contribute ideas or improvements that can be made to systems or processes to help achieve deliverables.
- Plays a leadership role as a key interface between business end users and all Financial Crime projects
- Maintains CLM Business Service process documentation and procedures, consulting with internal subject matter experts and contribute to the implementation of process improvements
- Recommend improvement to risk and control management by identifying problems and providing recommendations.
- Build out a 1LoD capability within SMBC EU, separate from those with Financial Crime Middle Office, to work alongside 2LoD teams.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Education & Qualifications
- The role requires the candidate to be educated to degree level in an appropriate field of study – e.g. finance or business management.
Experience & Knowledge
- Evidence of previous experience in financial services, markets and banking activities and/or the relevant Client Lifecycle Management initiatives in other industries.
- Experience of managing SLA and KPIs
- Proven ability to manage a wide range to stakeholders within a complex matrix organisation
- Experience working in a fast-paced operational team
- Ability to manage and monitor progress of various dependencies to ensure deadlines are met
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to work collaboratively as well as independently
- Must be detail orientated, analytical and inquisitive
- Evidence of effective communication skills both written and verbal including presenting complex information simply and succinctly
- Evidence of innovative thinking and problem-solving
- Must be able to communicate with empathy and sensitivity with colleagues across a range of functions and seniorities, bearing in mind cultural and language differences as well as the commercial realities of our business
- Able to work independently and under supervision to achieve agreed business outcomes.
