Purpose
SMBC are continuing their cloud adoption journey and are seeking a highly capable and motivated Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Cloud Engineer to join our growing cloud engineering team. In this role you will contribute to the design, implementation, and operation of Google Cloud–based solutions within a multi‑cloud environment.
You will work closely with cross‑functional stakeholders to deliver secure, resilient, scalable, and well‑governed cloud infrastructure that supports business and regulatory requirements.
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain core Google Cloud infrastructure and services in line with enterprise standards and architectural direction
- Work closely with internal IT teams, including Information Security, Networks, Infrastructure, and Support, to deliver compliant and resilient cloud solutions
- Build, maintain, and enhance Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using approved tools and engineering patterns
- Contribute to CI/CD and DevSecOps pipelines, helping to automate provisioning, configuration, and deployment of cloud workloads
- Monitor, support, and troubleshoot Google Cloud environments to ensure availability, performance, and operational stability
- Support the implementation and ongoing management of cloud security controls and best practices, including IAM, access management, encryption, and logging, in partnership with Information Security
- Collaborate with application and engineering teams to integrate cloud infrastructure with existing platforms and services
- Produce and maintain clear technical documentation covering designs, configurations, and operational procedures using corporate documentation tools
- Remain current with Google Cloud Platform technologies and industry best practices, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
- Participate in the evaluation, proof‑of‑concept, and adoption of new cloud services, tools, and capabilities as required
Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Proven experience (typically 3-5+ years) working as a Cloud Engineer with Google Cloud Platform
- Strong understanding of cloud computing concepts and their implementation in GCP, including networking, compute, storage, and security
- Experience supporting or contributing to enterprise‑scale cloud environments, ideally within regulated or risk‑aware organisations
- Working knowledge of enterprise GCP patterns, such as landing zones, shared services models, and network and connectivity approaches
- Experience with DevSecOps practices and tooling, including Git‑based workflows and CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Cloud Build, GitLab, etc.)
- Hands‑on experience with Infrastructure as Code, with Terraform experience strongly preferred
- Solid understanding of Google Cloud IAM, including roles, service accounts, and access control principles
- Experience with automation and scripting tools, such as Bash, PowerShell or Python
- Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve infrastructure issues
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across technical and non‑technical teams
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes/GKE) is advantageous
- Exposure to other cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure and AWS, is a strong plus
- Relevant Google Cloud certifications are desirable but not mandatory, e.g. Cloud Engineer (Associate/Professional), Cloud Network Engineer, etc.
