Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Legal Counsel for our STPD-Legal Dept in Dubai to join our team. 

• The Middle East region requires a progressive, commercially aware and forward-thinking junior-level legal professional to advise its front office, support and control teams across the Middle East & Africa on the legal risks relating to our business and conduct in the region. 
• The role and responsibilities include providing proactive, in depth, commercially focused advice and guidance to internal stakeholders acoss the SMBC Middle East & Africa region in line with our risk appetite.
• The role will have responsibility for advising on regional and global commercial contracts, data privacy,  banking product and commercial template creation, front office deal support, regional legal updates, guides, support with Bank internal projects, initiatives and process implementation and will role model the standards that reinforce a culture of integrity, quality, ethical behaviour and responsibility across the business.

The successful candidate will be appropriately legally qualified with a minimum of 3 years post qualification work experience gained from international private practice or an international financial institution in-house legal team.  Fluent English language written and oral communication skills are mandatory.  A familarity with corporate and commerical banking products will be an advantage. 

Business Area

The role sits within the STPD-Legal EMEA function and will join the Legal team based in the SMBC DIFC Branch, Dubai.  This legal team provides legal support and advice to all business and governance depts across SMBC's Middle East & Africa footprint.   The role will directly report to the director, senior legal counsel for STPD-Legal Middle East & Africa, who reports to the Head, Legal, Middle East & Africa.

Position Description

As a member of the STPD-Legal Dubai dept, the legal counsel will support senior lawyers in the dept and more widely across STPD-Legal EMEA with analysis and identification of the legal risks and implications of business transactions, vendor engagement, local governance and keeping the regional business and governance teams informed of developments in laws and regulations that potentially affect the business in the region.
