Role Summary
Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Vice President (Tax) (Middle East & Africa) for our Strategic & Planning Department – Finance & Contro to join our team.
Responsible for shaping tax strategy, ensuring compliance, and partnering with senior leadership to optimize tax outcomes.
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Overall responsible for timely and accurately meeting all direct and indirect tax requirements up to management expectations.
- Monitor and ensuring implementation of new applicable tax regulations on a timely basis including the UAE Corporate Income Tax (‘CIT’) without any breach.
- Maintaining a network of peers and professional advisors to ensure up to date market knowledge of tax technical developments.
- Leading tax projects relate to regional tax matters and making sure they are implemented within agreed timelines. This includes developing new or enhancing existing automation / implementing new tax regulation, etc.
- Developing relationships with front office teams to understand their business tax requirements and deliver proactive tax support, in particular to minimising transaction withholding tax costs, transaction documentation reviews, etc. to ensure a tax efficient operating model.
- For other SMBC offices in the MEA region and all regional jurisdictions where SMBC Dubai has material business interest, to ensure compliance with statutory tax obligations for the respective regional office, coordinate with the respective external tax advisors, review the returns, arrange signoff on the tax filings and arrange settlement of tax liabilities in a timely manner.
- Managing direct reports and working with other tax team members to ensure the delivery of the tax function objectives. This includes Inspiring, coaching and developing junior staff members.
- Promote a solution-oriented culture within the tax team.
- Managing various day to day matters related to culture initiative, HR and Admin for all the direct reports.
- Coordinating with various tax authorities in the region and keeping Finance Officer updated on the developments on the same.
- Keeping management updated with most relevant tax related market information and updates on periodic basis for all regional offices and all regional jurisdictions where SMBC Dubai has material business interest.
- Responsible for dealing with various tax enquiries, inspections, assessments, etc. within regulatory expectation and timeframe basis for all regional offices and all regional jurisdictions where SMBC Dubai has material business interest.
- Handle any query from any tax regulator in the MEA region including assisting them in mandatory audits/inquiries within the applicable deadline.
- Educating / training the relevant front office teams, other internal departments, regional offices administrators regarding the tax law /rule/provision and how to comply with the same effectively to achieve tax efficiency. This includes developing effective tax training framework.
- Responsible for leading or supporting in any projects / new initiatives which are assigned on a periodic basis by Finance Officer.
For you to succeed in the role, you’ll need to have:
- Expert knowledge and 15+ years core experience in international tax laws and regulations (Corporate Tax, Transfer Pricing, VAT, FATCA, CRS etc) and at least two years’ experience in UAE CIT & VAT.
- Strong accounting knowledge with ability to independently evaluated & analyse accounting data & information, flair for running tax automation projects and ability to use large database for computing various tax reporting.
- Experience in dealing with tax authorities, tax advisors, consultants and currently managing a team of direct report.
Position Description
This role exists to drive tax strategy aligned with corporate objectives, ensuring compliance and optimizing tax efficiency globally. The VP Tax will influence financial performance, manage risk, and support strategic growth initiatives.
