Role Summary

Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Derivative Specialist / VP for our Compliance Private Side Advisory to join our team.

The Derivative Specialist shall ensure SMBC Bank EU AG’s compliance with and adherence to all relevant regulatory requirements. The role is part of the Private Side Advisory Team in SMBC EU’s Compliance Department.

Primary responsibilities include monitoring and providing day-to-day Compliance advice relating to the supported Derivatives & FX business as well as guidance on applicable rules, i.e., laws and interpretation on internal policies and procedures. Role holder shall be responsible for liaising closely with the relevant Derivatives & FX counterparts and key stakeholders in the EMEA region and within SMBC / Nikko Tokyo, as well as across all SMBC EU business areas.

Main candidate requirements:

  • Proven experience of working within the financial services industry. Experience gained in a securities house, broker dealer and/or wholesale banking would be advantageous.

  • Knowledge of German / EU regulatory requirements and financial services / markets.

  • Solid understanding of FX & Derivatives products and good commercial acumen required. Experience gained in 1LOD / 1.5LOD roles would be advantageous.

Business Area

The Compliance Department liaises with compliance teams throughout the Group to ensure compliance with regards to German / EU matters. The role-holder supports the Compliance Function and is ultimately a member of the EMEA team and contributes to set the department strategy in line with SMBC / Nikko Tokyo and other relevant SMFG offices while supporting the business’s initiatives.

The Derivatives & FX business essentially covers the following main areas: Corporate Clients, Project Finance & Financial Sponsors and Financial Institutions. This is, therefore, considered to be a particularly important role given the level of technical expertise required to support the evolution into a top Universal Bank and the strategic business growth planned in these product areas.

As SMBC EU must demonstrate its own local governance requirements, it must have dedicated resources and cannot solely rely on the respective teams of other SMBC group companies. The role holder must therefore liaise closely with the relevant counterparts and key stakeholders, in the EMEA region in particular.

Position Description

The role is a niche expert role which requires thorough understanding of the firm’s structure and businesses including its products, systems, policies, processes, etc. which may be impacted by regulatory requirements. Furthermore, the key responsibilities are:

  • Assisting in the design, development, delivery and maintenance of best-in-class Compliance programs, policies and practices for Derivatives & FX business.
  • Providing guidance on rules and regulations relating to function / business / product operational issues, as well as provide transactional support and interpretation of internal compliance policies.
  • Assisting with regulatory inquiries and/or examinations. This may include coordination with regulators and other parties.
  • Collaborating with other internal areas to address compliance issues which may impact the supported Derivatives & FX business.
  • Supporting the function / business / product in performing timely compliance reviews of new products.
  • Along with the rest of the team, assisting in the development and administration of Compliance training, including the development of relevant materials.
