Role Summary
Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for a Global Mobility Advisor (Assistant Vice President) for our HR Department to join our team.
- The EMEA Global Mobility Advisor (Assistant Vice President) is responsible for enabling the safe, compliant, and commercially sound cross-border movement of employees in-, out- and across the EMEA region in support of the Bank’s strategy.
- The role operates on an EMEA-wide basis, irrespective of physical location, and provides expert advisory and delivery support across multiple jurisdictions.
- Operating within a developing Global Mobility function, the role combines hands-on operational support with process design, policy embedding, and capability building. It requires strong technical credibility, comfort working in ambiguity, and the ability to partner effectively across multiple stakeholders and teams.
- The role will support expatriate assignments from Japan, managing the associated nuances at a regional and local execution level. The role will also support the growing assignment and international hire population, including operating within mobility policy framework, as well as seeking to improve. We are looking for candidates ideally located in Frankfurt or Düsseldorf.
Position Description
Key accountabilities - EMEA Global Mobility Delivery & Advisor
- Deliver end to end hands-on case management ensuring high-quality employee experience alongside compliance with local, regional, and global requirements.
- Act as an EMEA Global Mobility subject matter advisor for employees, managers, HR Business Partners, and Talent teams on international assignments, permanent transfers, short-term mobility, and cross-border employment scenarios.
- Support and manage first-time mobility cases into, out of and across multiple EMEA jurisdictions.
- Support expatriate populations governed by Tokyo Head Office-owned policies, acting as the EMEA interface.
- Operate effectively across diverse cultural, regulatory, and business contexts within EMEA
Immigration, Tax, Payroll & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with immigration compliance across EMEA, and/or partner with relevant internal stakeholders to ensure compliance
- Provide subject matter support for EMEA immigration compliance, partnering with external counsel on visa, work permit, and right-to-work requirements.
- Act as a key interface between Global Mobility, Payroll, Tax, Reward, Finance, and Legal.
- Support for core mobility processes: assignment payroll, tax and social security concepts, including expat payrolls, shadow payroll, hypothetical tax, and tax equalisation.
- Support accurate setup and cessation of assignment payrolls, allowances, and payments.
Policy, Process & Framework Development
- Support rollout and embedding of Global mobility policies, as well as contributing to continuous improvement.
- Support the design and documenting of scalable end-to-end mobility processes.
- Develop operational guidance to improve efficiency and hand-offs to other teams.
- Contribute to governance, controls, and service standards appropriate to a regulated banking environment.
Stakeholder & Vendor Management
- Partner with HR, Reward, Payroll, Finance, Tax, and Legal teams across EMEA.
- Act as a trusted advisor balancing employee experience with cost, risk, and compliance.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Typically 4+ years of experience in Global Mobility, International HR, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of mobility frameworks and regulatory environments.
- Working knowledge of immigration, assignment payroll, mobility-related tax, social security and other compliance principles.
- Experience operating in developing or immature Global Mobility functions with a strong willingness to work on process improvement and setup.
- Strong stakeholder management, organizational, and compliance-focused capabilities.
- Strong hands-on team player with a willingness to take ownership of operational and administrative responsibilities within the function.
