Is the next step in your career at SMBC Group EMEA? We’re looking for an Assitant Vice President position for our CIB - CBD1 Department to join our team. 

The Credit Officer (Assistant Vice President) is responsible for conducting credit reviews of corporate customers, recommending appropriate obligor and facility gradings, and supporting sound credit risk management as the first line of defence. The role covers the preparation and review of credit applications, continuous portfolio monitoring, and the effective operation of the Credit Team while ensuring compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and risk management frameworks.

The anticipated salary range for this role is EUR 68.000 to EUR 104.000, with the final offer determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, role scope, location, and relevant market factors. Essentials of the Role

  • Conduct credit risk analysis and prepare high-quality credit applications for corporate customers.
  • Monitor a portfolio of corporate clients and maintain accurate obligor and facility gradings.
  • Support effective Credit Team operations and ensure compliance with internal and regulatory requirements.

Candidate Requirements

  • Strong credit analysis and financial modelling skills.
  • Experience with corporate lending products including loans, guarantees, trade finance and derivatives.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills with fluency in English (Japanese and/or German preferred).

Business Area

The position sits within Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) – CBD1 and is part of the Front Office Credit Team based in Düsseldorf.

The team is responsible for reviewing and monitoring credit risk for a portfolio of Japanese and Asian corporate customers across Europe. The role supports a broad range of products including syndicated and bilateral loans, derivatives, trade finance and guarantees, while working closely with Marketing Officers, Credit Department and other internal stakeholders to ensure sound risk management and efficient credit processes.

Position Description

The Credit Officer is responsible for assessing the creditworthiness of corporate customers through detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis and preparing credit applications for submission to Credit Department. The role includes financial statement analysis, cash flow forecasting, industry and peer analysis, transaction assessment, and recommending appropriate obligor and facility gradings.

The successful candidate will manage an assigned portfolio of corporate clients and undertake ongoing monitoring to identify any deterioration in credit quality. The role also involves reviewing credit documentation, supporting special credit situations, responding to regulatory requirements, and maintaining compliance with internal policies, ECB expectations, KGW18 monitoring requirements, and audit recommendations.

In addition, the position will contribute to the efficient operation of the Credit Team by supporting junior colleagues, improving internal processes and documentation, engaging with customers and internal stakeholders, and driving operational enhancements through digitalisation, automation and other efficiency initiatives.

The role is also expected to contribute to the training and development of junior team members and support continuous improvement initiatives across the Credit Team.
